The Nikon SP and other rangefinder cameras from the 1950s and 1960s competed directly with versions from Leica and Zeiss. However, the company soon discontinued development of the rangefinder line in order to concentrate its attention on the Nikon F single-lens reflex camera line, which was a success when it was introduced in 1959. Nikon’s F-series SLR cameras were the most commonly used for almost 30 years.
